  1. I first saw this movie sometime between '01 and '05, after checking it out from WWU's library. Jim didn't want to watch it, so I did so by myself. I just loved it and knew he would too, but he still scoffed at the notion.

Not long after, he took a trip to Portland. Here's the conversation we had upon his return:

JIM: I saw this great movie with Jon and Larisa called 'You Can Count on Me.' You have to see it!
ME: Um, yeah. You mean that movie that I tried to get you to watch?
    JIM: Oh, you did?
    MELISSA: *face-palm*

Anyway, I actually started the movie over again right after I finished it the first time. I thought it was that good. Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo are always spectacular, but it wasn't just the acting that made me love this film so much...

Oh, you know what? I should probably wait until LISA watches it, lest I get spoilery.

  2. Oh, hell no! I just spend like 20 minutes writing a really great review for it and it was lost.

Peace. I'm out for the night.

But I did see it...and I loved it!

  3. Dammit! It did it again. I guess I wrote too much.

    Okay, the short version.
Sammy was awesome and loved her layers. Even though I hated Brian, I appreciated the elements he added to Sammy. I hope Sammy and Bob end up together, I think he'd be good for her.

Rudy, while subdued and quiet, added so much to every scene he was in. The part when he was telling Sammy that Rudy Sr wasn't his dad because that's what he told the cops....TEARS! Nice cameo from Josh Lucas.

My favorite part was Terry. I LOVED Terry, and I love Mark Ruffalo. Best. Part. Ever.
I loved how he didn't hide his faults, the relationship he had with Rudy, and how because he became a role model for who he was he began to change/pick up his life.

I love sibling movies. It makes me grateful for mine.
There truly isn't a relationship like a sibling. And while I haven't always gotten a long with mine, or agreed on things, I know that they will always be there for me. They totally have my back. We have such an amazing sibling dynamic that we are even super close to the in-laws! (relatively speaking) It just sucks cause these movies also make me wish I lived closer to mine. Y'all suck! At least I have some in-laws that I see about once a week. We can make everyone else jealous!

    Brilliant movie! Loved it.

  4. ok, so I finally got around to updating a post on this topic. sorry about the late notice. I really liked this movie, but I didn't love it. Sorry. I really typically enjoy "slice of life" movies that don't have any typical climaxes and dénouement, but this movie I just kinda felt so-so about. I enjoyed the relationship of the siblings and the uncle/nephew, but it didn't "move me" as I thought it would. I liked seeing Sammie's character branch out from her normal routine. We were hinted at the days when she used to "be wild" but we're shown how she's grown up raising a kid on her own. It seem like her brother's visit brings out the recklass side to her, which she kinda hates but kinda embraces. I enjoyed seeing that character, as well as Terry's character, but I just don't know if it lived up to the hype for me. Overall, good movie, but not my fave.

  5. You know, I didn't expect to like this movie as much as I did. I love character movies, but somethings I'm weary just cause I don't know if I'm going to be in love with them to spend the time watching them.

I think, for me, what made me really love this story was Terry. If Terry wasn't in it, I don't know that I'd want to spend 2 hours watching Sammie do her thing.

And don't be sorry. This is the whole point of this.
    From now on, no apologies!
